Torrential rains cause flash flooding in Houston

Severe weather hit the Houston area Monday, flooding streets and homes and leaving several thousand people without power, emergency officials said.

Torrential rain fell hard and heavy across the area, causing flash flooding that left streets and highways impassable and even submerged some vehicles.

“We have a lot of roadways closed and some evacuations are going on,” said Alan Spears of the Fort Bend County office of emergency management.

Bengals, Texans seek playoff breakthrough

Andy Dalton and T.J. Yates weren’t around for any of the miserable seasons the Bengals and Texans have had over the past two decades.

The rookie quarterbacks now control which of the long-suffering franchises gets a milestone victory when the teams open the playoffs on Saturday. They’ll make some NFL history no matter who wins — it’s the first time two rookie starters will face off in a postseason game.

“It shows how much the game has changed in these days,” said Yates, who’ll make his sixth career start.

Customers at Starbucks’ coffee shops in Houston are going to have shell out an extra dime for a tall cup of Joe or a tall latte.

The Seattle-based chain is hiking prices on some of its drinks in the Northeast and Sunbelt regions, but it hasn’t given a complete list of the states and cities that are affected.

It is known, however, that the cities that will see price hikes includes Houston, Boston, Atlanta, Dallas and Albuquerque, N.M. States that will not be affected include Florida and California, the Associated Press reports.

Houston WR Johnson to return against Titans

Houston star receiver Andre Johnson will play against Tennessee on Sunday after missing the last three games because of a strained left hamstring.

Coach Gary Kubiak said Johnson will be on a play count, but wasn’t sure how many. Johnson has played only six games this season after missing six straight with a right hamstring injury that required surgery.

“It was all depending on how the week went and everything went fine this past week, so I’ll be able to go out and play a little bit on Sunday,” Johnson said.

Houston calls for postponements

Peter Houston praised his Dundee United side and their hosts St Mirren for serving up “a brilliant match” in their 2-2 Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League draw – but still thought the game could easily have been postponed due to the stormy conditions.

The two teams exchanged a flurry of four goals in eight minutes in the wind and rain in Paisley, with Steven Thompson and, spectacularly, Graham Carey twice putting the home side in front, only to be pulled back by rapid goals from Jon Daly and Stuart Armstrong.

Houston man whose case advanced gay rights dies

In the eight years since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states may not criminalize private homosexual conduct, courts and legislatures across the country have struggled to define gay rights.

The debate changed for both sides after a watershed 2003 Supreme Court ruling in a case that originated in Houston. The court voted 6-3 to guarantee privacy rights for gay men and lesbians – reversing a 1986 decision that permitted states to outlaw homosexual acts, even in homes.
