Officials say Houston’s Metropolitan Transit Authority violated federal laws when it created its new light-rail lines.

The Federal Transit Administration says Metro must resolve the issue to qualify for a $900 million grant to continue the project.

Houston suburb debating illegal immigrant rent ban

The city council of a Houston suburb plans to debate an ordinance that would prevent illegal immigrants from owning or renting property and running businesses.

At its meeting on Tuesday, the Tomball City Council also planned to debate whether to make English the city’s official language and discuss the future of a city-run day labor site.

Indian filmmaker jailed in Houston

A documentary filmmaker remained jailed in Houston on federal immigration charges for allegedly having brass knuckles in his airplane luggage, authorities said.

Vijay Kumar, who was traveling to Canada Aug. 20, was detained by airport security officers who said he was acting suspiciously and had suspicious literature in his luggage, the Houston Chronicle reported Friday.

In 2008, Houston receiver Patrick Edwards broke his leg in two places when he ran into a metal service cart in the back of the end zone and is suing the school and conference for that incident. Edwards filed the lawsuit Tuesday in Kanawha County Circuit Court.

Boyfriend confessed to 1984 Houston double murder

Police say a man called in by detectives investigating an unsolved 26-year-old murder case has confessed to the killings of his girlfriend and their infant daughter.

Sgt. Eli Cisneros and Senior Police Officer Connie Park announced the capital murder charges against 56-year-old Charles Leon Smith on Wednesday.

Police say the confession came during a routine re-investigation of cold cases. Smith confessed to the Aug. 2, 1984, strangling of 23-year-old Pamela Clarence and the suffocating of their 1-month-old daughter, Tashona.
