Georgia State to visit University of Houston
Jan 19th
Georgia State’s second-year football program will visit the University of Houston during the 2011 season.
The Panthers, who finished 6-5 under head coach Bill Curry in their inaugural 2010 season, will visit Robertson Stadium on Sept. 24.
It will be the FCS’s program second game against an FBS opponent. The Panthers closed the 2010 season with a loss at the University of Alabama. This spring, Georgia State will be graduating only five seniors, including just one starter in place-kicker Iain Vance.
“This game presents another tremendous opportunity for our football team to test itself against a strong Houston program on their home field,” Curry said. “Houston has an impressive coach in Kevin Sumlin and an outstanding quarterback in Case Keenum, who was injured this season but has been granted a sixth year of eligibility.”
Georgia State’s entire 2011 schedule, which features six home games and four additional road games, will be finalized and announced in the coming weeks.
China Starts U.S. Trade Trip With $600 Million in Deals
Jan 17th
The Chinese government kicked off a four-day U.S. trade mission on Monday by signing six deals in Houston with undisclosed U.S. companies worth $600 million, according to Chinese state media reports.
The deals came a day before Chinese President Hu Jintao arrives in the United States for a visit being billed as the most important U.S.-China summit since Deng Xiaoping’s visit to Washington 30 years ago.
China’s vice commerce minister, Wang Chao, led a business delegation to Houston, signing two cotton import agreements, an agreement on import of assembly kits, an agreement on “development and application of efficient crystalline silicon solar cells and photovoltaic generation system,” and a deal on porcelain imports, said state media outlet Xinhua. An official with the Chinese Consulate in Houston declined to provide details on the companies involved. Wang’s Houston delegation included 120 government and business officials, said the Greater Houston Partnership, the city’s business development arm. More >
